Spring Bikini Weather: Diet, Exercise Time Coming For Clearwater Beach, Florida

Let's face, every day that passes brings us closer to spring and warm sunny days and, OH MY GOD, bikini weather! That's right, bikini time on Clearwater Beach. Warm sunny weather means it's time to head to the beach and have some fun. Let's face it guys, it's also that time of year when we want to look good in our board shorts and swim trunks too. This man is working it now to be ready for that time.

What will you do to get ready for bikini weather, and summer on Clearwater Beach? Will you diet? If you diet, will you be using a branded diet, like the South Beach Diet, or Momentum by Medifast!, or Beachbody.com? Or will you do it the old fashioned way, by watching what you eat all on your own? What about exercise? Are you the running type, or will you strap on a pair of TOMS Shoes and go for a long walk in stead?

There are lots of choices out there, so you need to look carefully and see what you can find, and what makes sense for you. There are complete packages available that will guide you through the exercise and diet programs, like P90X.com and Beachbody.com. Can you make the commitment? You have to remember, you are worth it! Yes, you can do it! Give yourself permission to succeed, and then go for it.

Of course, it may be that all you really need is a little 'tidy up' after a winter of long pants and sweaters. Perhaps you just need something like the TRIA Laser Hair Removal System. After all, you want to look your best, and you want to be able to wear whatever you want on the beach!

Yes, the beach is a wonderful place to go for a walk. No, it doesn't have to be all about lying in the warm, bright sunshine and getting a tan. You can just go to the beach and take a walk while enjoying some of the most beautiful scenery in Florida!

If you haven't been to the beach lately, what are you waiting for? Walking is great exercise, and the beach is a great place to do it. There are lots of entertainment options while you are walking on the beach. You can scan the waters of the Gulf Of Mexico looking for dolphins. They are often spotted just offshore. It's great fun to see them, and then watch for the next place they will surface to see if you can follow them.

You can people watch while you are walking on the beach. There are usually at least a few people around on the beach with you. If you like to have more people to watch when you are on the beach, just take a look around when you get there. On Clearwater Beach, you can usually find more people at the south end of the beach, and less at the north end of the beach. So, depending on how many people you want to watch, turn north or south.

You can search for seashells, like Sally, while walking on the beach. Clearwater Beach often has lots of pretty seashells to be found. I often bring home a small pocketful when I walk on the beach. It's fun to see all the different varieties and shapes of seashells.

You can meditate while you walk on the beach. That's right. Lots of people do. As you walk, you get into a rhythm and the next thing you know, you are drifting off in your mind. It's a great way to relax and unwind. You may come to a stop and realize you have walked quite a distance and now feel refreshed and calm. That is a wonderful feeling!

Whatever it is you decide to do, get down to the beach and do it. You will be so glad you did. We'd love to see you down there, people watching or dolphin spotting with the rest of us. =D

As I write this, it's 44 degrees outside, and the wind is blowing like mad. That's not very Florida-like if you ask me. But nobody's asking. Meanwhile, this was a more pleasant and sunny scene from earlier this year. Think back to the summer time when the sun was shining brightly, and the air was calm and warm. Not warm... HOT.

Now try to keep that warmth inside you tonight as the mercury drops further and further. Wherever you are, I wish you a warm night and a safe winter.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Beach People: Father Photographing Children Feeding Seagulls

It's a beautiful part of childhood and growing up... and parenthood! The children, in this case the son and daughter, squeal gleefully while feeding the birds, in this case seagulls, while Dad snaps away with his camera. So father gets lots of photographs of his children enjoying a good time on the sandy white beaches of Clearwater, Florida.

Sounds great, doesn't it. It is. It's also, I wonder, a statement of how relentless we are in our attempts to document a moment, to capture a time, to hold on to wonderful memories of the people in our lives that we love so dearly. I'm okay with that. I'm guilty. I would take pictures of my loved ones every day, if they would only stand for it. It's not so difficult to take pictures of babies every day, of course, because they can't give you any grief about it. :)

On note of caution though... remember to put the camera down once in a while, and jump in there with your loved ones. Be a part of the memory as well. It's a sad moment when you look back at those photographs and realize that you are not IN any of them. Just a thought.

2010 Clearwater Foster Grant Ironman Triathlon Athlete bibs 879, 823, 789, 911, 887, and others I can't make out. All different ages, all different backgrounds, from all around the world! Training and training and training to compete in some of the most difficult races in the world, the triathlon. It really is amazing. I loved how many of them would look toward the camera and smile. It was really fun.

All sorts of configurations, all sorts of weird wheels and frames and hardware. So not like anything you see for sale in a garage sale. I love the shoes and racing wear some of them wore. Very cool.

A tourist couple observes the powerful, taut muscles of a female triathlete on her hi-tech racing bicycle. I know, the helmet isn't very attractive, but it's all about function, not form! It amazes me to see the awesome physical fitness of these championship triathlon athletes.

What does it make you think of? Does it inspire you to get outside and exercise more? Does it make you want to get in shape, maybe compete? Or does it make you feel like there is no point in even trying?

It's baaaaack! Do you remember? It's that time of year! The 2010 Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 Triathlon will be hosted by Clearwater Beach and Clearwater in just two weeks! That's right, it's coming on Saturday, November 13th! I know you are dying to get fired up and ready for it, so I am loading up this post with all kinds of links and information for you! I know what a lot of people are wondering and worrying about: THE TRAFFIC!!! How much of a mess is it going to be? What am I going to do? How will I get where I want to go? Don't worry, calm down. It really will be alright. I want you all to remember to show these athletes and the visitors who come to see them what a great place Clearwater Beach is, and what a wonderful bunch of people we have here! For those of you who are interested in the athletes that have worked so hard to qualify for such a daunting challenge as this, you can visit the Athletes Guide web page to learn more about them. If you aren't really interested in ANY of all that broo-ha-ha, you might just want to plan to be at the beach early, find a nice quiet spot to the north of the roundabout, and stay there until later in the afternoon. But then, with scenery like this, how could that be a bad thing?

Now that I have been round and round the various web pages and web sites to find the best information for you, I found a part of the Traffic Impact brochure that may just be the most valuable. So I am taking a chance that they won't hate me, and posting just the intersection guide below. After all, when it comes to the potential traffic nightmare, this may be the Rosetta Stone of it all. :)

I am hearing the weather reports from up north, and it sounds like the cold weather is starting to make its winter appearance. Fear not, chilly northerly neighbors! I come posting warming pictures of warm sunshine beach scenes!! Yes, Clearwater Beach is still warm and filled with sunshine, waiting for your holiday vacation pleasures, or even just your cold winter night's fantasies!

Seriously, what did you expect? Well, he did look like sort of mean, and he IS in a kayak. So what the heck. :)

I couldn't help but think that it must have been great fun for that dog to be able to get out on the water, way out on the water, without having to swim it for himself! Of course, there is lots of material here regarding 'dog paddling' and all that, but I will let you roll around in that on your own.

So I posted a picture of the surfer above yesterday, and I had just happened to get another decent shot of him, so here you go. But just so you all don't think I'm in some kind of delusion about this being really easy... I post the picture of the surfer below. Yeah, can you say WIPEOUT! (Or is it WIPE OUT, or WIPE-OUT?) Either way, I can still hear that song in my head now!

Say what? Yeah, really! I got a hot tip the other day (thanks Andrew) that there was actually going to be some surf action at Sand Key beach this week. So I trucked it on down there with my trusty camera and tripod, and caught a little hang ten action.

Okay, back to reality now. No, we don't get 8 foot curlers here on the Gulf of Mexico, but every once in a while we get a weather system that produces some surf-worthy action. So you've got to give credit to these people who come out here and make the best of what little they get. It was really pretty fun to watch. More fun to do, no doubt, but still fun to watch.

If this gets you all fired up to indulge in some surfing fantasies for a little while, you might want to check out Surfer Magazine, or Surfing Magazine. If you want to be able to catch the action, from the sand or a board, you might want to check out Surfline.com for the latest Sand Key Beach surf report.

You have to admit, even though you really can't see any really big waves in this shot, this guy makes it look good. Very surfer. There were probably 15 or 20 guys out there altogether. This guy was one of the better ones, but they all seemed to be having a good time. So now I will be looking for the signs in the future, and heading down to Sand Key when the Surf's Up! Check back tomorrow for a couple more surfing pictures.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Bright House 2010 Clearwater Super Boat National Championship Festival: Dick Landy Racing Team

If you had a chance to get down to the Brighthouse 2010 Clearwater Super Boat Championship Festival, and if you were taking pictures and photographs, you might have caught these cool Dodge race cars in your frame. These are two cars of the Dick Landy Racing Team. Dandy Dick, I think I saw on one of the license plates. You might have to click the pic to see it larger if you want to read it.

It was really cool to see these hot rod muscle cars in amongst all the offshore racing powerboats. But maybe hot rod muscle cars is the wrong term? On the Official Dick Landy website, it has good information about him and the cars he built and raced.

They had two more vintage Mopar race monsters there and, of all things, a very hot, sleek, completely different Lamborghini! But that is for a different day. Yes, that's right, you'll just have to come back and see it later! :p

But in the meantime, you might find it interesting to know that Dick Landy was quite a name in Pro Stock Drag Racing. I mean, you can even go to Amazon.com and buy a Photo Archive book with a picture of him racing one of his cars, on the front cover! And to top that off, Hot Wheels made a model of his 1965 Dodge Coronet! Yeah, if you want to check it out, here are the links:

This thing is absolutely over the top! Can you say 'belly of the beast'? I love it! So wide, so awesome, they gotta ship it leaning up on edge! Did you get down there to the Baystar Village and check it all out? With a little time, you could walk all around the place and check out some serious offshore powerboat racing machinery! I mean, talk about unlimited!! This is AMSOIL #77, a whole lot of serious boat!

I snapped this shot while prowling the Brighthouse 2010 Clearwater Super Boat Championship Festival 'dry pits' last Friday. It was really amazing to wander around all these high performance race boats. It was a very different world. I got lots more pictures from that evening, so check back if you want to see more of them. Clearwater Beach, Florida: Bright House 2010 Clearwater Super Boat National Championship Festival: Stihl #13

Can you say SUPER BOAT? Can you say STIHL CHAINSAW? Or is it SUPERBOAT? Either way... What a whole lotta boat!!! These things are monstrous! Better Half and I headed down to the Clearwater waterfront Friday evening to check out the staging of the super boats for the Super Boat National Championship race. Again I say "WOW!"

I was thinking, you gotta really want to show off that million dollar boat to have a special trailer that leans it up like that, so we can all see it better. Then I realized that it is up on edge like that because it is so freaking wide that it can't be driven down the road when in the flat position! Wow, again.

Today, the super boats will be tearing around the Gulf of Mexico off Clearwater Beach in the second and final day of racing. I hope you got a chance to check it out. Blogger Dearest (me) was not able to be there. Oh well. I had a great time checking them out in the 'dry pits' before race day. Very cool, and I got a lot closer.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Bright House 2010 Clearwater Super Boat National Championship Festival: SuperHeat #52

What is it about a Super Boat (Superboat?) that inspires people to ham it up and become super boat show models? I dunno, but I'm pretty sure it's contagious! What a hoot. Everyone was having a good time, checking out these enormous, powerful offshore race boats. It was really amazing. This is SuperHeat #52. What an awesome boat.

This was the scene Friday evening at Coachman Park, on the Clearwater waterfront, where the super boats were staging in their 'dry pits' before race day. Lots of people running around getting things ready, and probably resting from whatever long drive they just completed to get down here for the races. I can't imagine what it takes to get into, and then sustain the effort of, offshore racing. Wow.

The girls and the daddy seemed to be having more fun that some of us. But it was fun watching them 'strike a pose'. Kids, ya gotta love 'em. In case you're wondering, I figure this boat can go about a gazillion miles an hour.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Bicycle Transportation Option

What's not to love about spending some time down on Clearwater Beach, leaving the car parked and hopping on one of these sporting bicycles to get around for the day. Think of how relaxing to downshift and cruise around on one of these for a change. Get out of that steel bubble you drive all week and chill. :)

Ironically (not to be confused with Ironman-iacally), this photograph was captured during the Ironman Race Event last year. I remember thinking what a huge contrast between the sleek, built-for-speed machines used in that Ironman Triathlon and these casual, ride-around cruisers that you can find wheeling about the beach on any given day. Yes, these bikes would only cost a fraction of what is spent on those Triathlete rides.

In fact, Amazon.com has lots of sweet looking beach cruisers, many for under $200, like the Pacific Shorewood Women's Cruiser Bike (26-Inch Wheels)or the New Micargi 26" 7 Speed Mens Bike Beach Cruiser Bicycle Rover Blackmodel.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Beach People: The Most Beautiful Fitness Trail Ever

Clearwater Beach makes for a wonderful fitness trail. Any given day on the beach you will see people of all sorts getting out in the sun and getting fit. There are many shades to this phenomenon, some people are doing good just to be out there walking slowly down the beach with a water bottle. Other people are more than ready to go jogging down the beach for miles on end without stopping. Even if you just sit and watch them all go by, it's a great place for getting out in the sun and the fresh air.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Pelicans Rule The Skies

Seeing birds in flight is always a stirring moment. Pelicans, however, take it to a higher level. They rule the skies, and to see the way they can soar and glide is something else. I've seen these large birds gliding like a silent jet just inches above the surface of the water. I've also seen them come crashing down into the waves in a fish catching dive. They are really amazing birds, and it's wonderful to see them in action.

That being said, I will continue to hope that their populations do not decline as a result of the long term effects of the BP oil leak. I know it sounds like most of the oil just miraculously disappeared, and I would be as happy as anyone else if that's true. But I just have a hard time believing it. I will keep my fingers crossed.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Beach People, Cast Netting... Old Man and the Sea?

I hope I can write this without seeming patronizing. I watched this man throwing this cast net for a while as I was walking up Clearwater Beach toward him. I couldn't help but think, as I watched him throwing that net, that I hope I can still get around that well when I am his age. Yes, in truth, I have no idea how old he is. But I can hope to be that mobile when I get to be the age that I THINK he is. I don't know if you can tell it from here, but he was pretty darn good at throwing that net.

And if I may be so bold... I think this man makes a good 'poster child' for retirement here in the Clearwater Beach area. When you have the time to enjoy it, the beach is a wonderful place to wile away the days. If you get active like this man, all the better. What a great way to enjoy the freedom of time once you have worked so many years to earn it. Not to sound too much like a commercial, Clearwater and Clearwater Beach really do seem to me to be good places to consider if you want to enjoy an active retirement lifestyle.

I had a cast net when I was young. The method for casting it that I was taught involved holding one of the weights in my teeth. I can tell you, I almost lost some teeth on more than one occasion. If you don't get it right, and let go of that weight at the right moment, it gets ripped out of your mouth with no respect for any work your dentist has done in there! I'm not kidding, I thought that big dog was getting ready to have a little snack! If you click on the photo to see a larger version you get a better idea of just how much BIGGER that big dog is, compared to the little one. Yeah, there is a second dog in this picture, but it's kind of hard to see the little guy. Go on, click it, you know you want to. Don't worry, it will open in a new tab or window, and you can just close that one when you are done, and you will be right back here. :) Clever, eh?

I have to admit though, that little snack... er, I mean... that little dog was not about to back down. He was ready to take him on any time. Come to think of it, maybe the little dog was a Samurai Puppy! Hey, you never know, it could happen!

The beach is a great place for the whole family. I love to see dogs playing in the surf and waves with their owners. But it's best when you can tell that the owner is taking good care of that dog. Remember to bring plenty of fresh water for your dog when you take him to the beach. Oh, and don't forget those very important plastic baggies for when he does his business. Let's face it, NOBODY wants to run into a big old pile of 'rover-was-here' when they are enjoying the beach.

The beach can be a wonderful place to spend time with someone you love. It seems to me that if you are going to leave the house wearing the same color as your walking partner, then there must be love there, on some level.

All kidding aside, this is just one of many photos I get like this, of couples enjoying the beach. Along with all the other things to see and do while at the beach, just being there with a friend or loved one is reason enough to get down there and get on the sand!

Clearwater, Florida: Sun-N-Fun Festival Disc Golf Tournament At Coachman Park

Sunday marked the end of the 2010 Sun-N-Fun Festival Disc Golf Tournament in Clearwater, at Coachman Park. The weather was great for flinging discs, and it seemed like most people had a really good time. I got to learn a little more about disc golf, a rapidly growing sport indeed! This sport is going nuts. Let me say this to folks reading this article, if you don't already have a disc golf course in your town right now, you can just about bet that one is in the works, or will be soon. It's just plain fun, and very, very accessible to anyone who wants to have some fun. And let's not ignore the style factor! Check out the player in the picture above. I love his style, both putting and fashion.

But don't get me wrong, these folks are also very serious about their game, in a good way. They have some of the funnest gear, like the buggies you see in the photo above. I mean, how many of you would LOVE an excuse to cruise around with that buggy, complete with a Tommy Bahama umbrella? Talk about living large!! I love it!

He had a great idea for playing disc golf after dark, followed by more and more ideas, and he is working hard to bring his ideas to everyone who enjoys the sport. Clearwater Beach, Florida: Of Soaring Birds And Swelling Waves

Wow, I mean, like, this shot really came out pretty cool. Not perfect, but pretty cool. And I post it on a day when I don't want to go outside because of the stink that some people say may be coming from the oil rig accident hundreds of miles away in the Gulf of Mexico. I hope everyone is taking the big hint right now, and reconsidering letting them drill for oil even closer to Florida's coast.

I hate to imagine the disaster if something like this were to happen even closer to us. The news video online was just showing the bodies of some dead migratory birds. Meanwhile, the smiling reporter says that even though the air stinks, the air quality alarms are not going off, and there is nothing to worry about. What a crock of poo. When you keep thinking to yourself, "What's that smell?", then it's time to be worried about what kind of toxins are in the air to make it smell like that!

But hey, what do I know? I will tell you this... if your breathing is the LEAST bit compromised already, I would stay the heck indoors, with all the windows closed, and away from this smell until it blows away. Let's all just hope it dissipates quickly! In fact, let's all keep our fingers crossed that they get that damaged and leaking oil well under control soon!

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Night Flight Disc Golf

I want to tell you all about two cool new things I have been learning about lately. Disc Golf, and Lighted Disc Golf. Disc Golf is all about throwing discs that are like Frisbee discs on steroids, into baskets made of steel and chains. You play on a course with multiple baskets, much like a regular golf course. I didn't know much about it several months ago, but it turns out there are courses all over the place. There are several in Pinellas County, with at least two listed in Clearwater! That's right, there is one listed at Cliff Stephens Park (21 holes), and another listed at Northeast Coachman Park (24 holes).

Lighted Disc Golf is the same as Disc Golf, but you attach tiny little LED lights to your discs, and insert LED basket lights in the baskets, and play IN THE DARK. Very cool. The man in the picture above is Daniel Schultz. He is the man behind Night Flight Disc Golf. He didn't invent Disc Golf, or the idea of playing in the dark, but he did come up with some really cool lights for your discs and baskets. And if you are interested in checking it all out, this coming weekend, May 1 and 2, there will be a Disc Golf tournament as part of the Fun-N-Sun Festival at Northeast Coachman Park in Clearwater.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Of Birds And Waves And Sand And Life

Brave little bird, wandering on the shore, ekes out a joyous life, among sand and waves and more. Such an illusion we some of us live in. I watch the shore birds scurry here and there among the shells and surf. I watch them scamper back and forth, darting here and there to snatch a morsel of food from the wet sand. It all seems so simple, and I envy them that simplicity, that seeming innocent life.

It's easy to ignore the reality of their lives while walking in the warm sun of a Sunday morning, even as I work to mentally escape the troubles and tribulations of my 'human existence'. Yes, I have a mortgage, a car payment, doctors and dentists to see, work to deal with, aches and pains and disappointment. What of a little bird upon the shore?

The little bird must constantly hunt for its food. Stop hunting, starve to death. Stop moving, get eaten. A daily routine of avoiding the crushing feet of unaware joggers, the fangs of unleashed dogs, the chaotic ambulations of toddlers, to say nothing of the NATURAL dangers surrounding them. Yes, it's nice to see the graceful dancing upon the shore, but I think I will resist that desire to trade places...

Clearwater Beach, Florida: November? No Problem! Jogging, Fishing, Walking And More!

Even IF you don't like the beach, or even IF you don't like Florida, you HAVE to admit... it's pretty cool to be able to enjoy weather like this in NOVEMBER! Yeah, late November, and the sun is sparkling on the water, the sand is warm underfoot. I guess that's why they call it Paradise!

It was a beautiful morning for a walk, and that's what we did. Yes, I would like to say I am energetic like the woman jogger in this picture, but I wasn't feeling like that. On that particular day, I was happy to stroll along with my trusty Nikon, snapping up beach pictures, and water pictures, and bird pictures and people pictures. That was all I needed at the moment to enjoy the day. Well, that and my sweetie!

Clearwater Beach, Florida: People Pictures: Family: Mother & Child

How much more wonderful can life be? To be a mother on the beach with your child or baby must be a great day! It's wonderful to experience a baby's wonder at the world, and their excitement at seeing and feeling sand and water and wave for the first time. Of course, sometimes it's more like terror for the baby in question, but mostly it seems to be a delight to them to explore something so new and different.

Now that there are a couple of twin grandchildren in my life, I notice neat ideas like the Fat Head custom wall sticker enlargements. As they say:

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Beach People Pictures... And A Dolphin Too!

I have always enjoyed people watching on the beach. And now that I am so deeply involved in my photographically oriented websites, I really enjoy taking people pictures at the beach. I watched this couple walking on the beach, and wondered if I will be lucky enough to enjoy both the companionship and mobility that they seem to be enjoying.

In true snap and run style, although I saw it for myself later, I had no idea there was a dolphin in the background of this shot when I snapped it. So there it is. The shot is all the more fun as I managed to include the dolphin that she is looking at.

And if you are interested in knowing, I was carrying my Nikon D80 with 18-55mm zoom lens when I snapped this shot. It's an AWESOME camera, and takes wonderful pictures in spite of me! Nowadays, they have an improved model for sale, which costs less than what I paid for my D80 (as I recall). But I must also say this. There are times when I don't want to carry the full load of a digital SLR with me, for a variety of reasons. At those times, I value the potency of a highly competent digital pocket camera. For some years now I have used a Canon Powershot SD as my pocket camera, and it has never let me down. Clearwater Beach, Florida: Cottage For Rent, Scooters Too? and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Okay, I think we have all had enough of the Ironman Photos... for now. So let's talk about scooters, and beach cottages for rent on Clearwater Beach, and your vacation, and Thanksgiving!

I got this shot in the North Beach area of Clearwater Beach. The beach itself is just about a hundred yards to the left, in this photo. In my mind, this is the kind of picture that illustrates why so many people come to Clearwater and Clearwater Beach. It's "The Beach Life" that they find so appealing. That sensation of carefree serenity and fun and relaxation. Not to mention the beautiful weather, wonderful sunsets, and the feelings of sand in your toes. And these days, you can throw in a fun ride on a scooter too!

Meanwhile, Thanksgiving is here, and it's that time when we are more prone to stop and reflect on what we have to be thankful for. Believe me, if you are reading this, you probably have more to be thankful for than some. Myself, I am thankful for everything and everyone in my life. Even the annoying things still represent my good fortune of being able to live the life I do. When I sit down for dinner with my family tomorrow, I will be thankful for them first, and second for the very fact that we get to sit down together, and that we can afford all the food we need, and a warm, dry place to sleep each night. And it just goes on and on.

If you are thinking about a vacation, consider Clearwater Beach. It's a wonderful place to vacation. There are plenty of hotels and cottages and room for rent to choose from. You'll have a great time on the beach, with sunny weather, and much warmer than places where it is snowing right about now. And of course, there are dozens and dozes of great places to eat on the beach, or on the nearby mainland.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: 2009 FOSTER GRANT IRONMAN Pre-Race Photos Ford Cars

Did I mention that Ford was all over the place at the Ironman Race? Wow, talk about owning the event. They had an awesome display out there at Clearwater Beach. This is a shot that my 'consulting editor' told me was one of the best I got. What do you think? I kind of like it myself, it's true.

Of course, it's also a great ad for the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid. But really, the most fuel-efficient hybrid on the planet? Maybe. But for a little SUV, the price seems pretty steep. According to the Ford Escape Hybrid website, the starting MSRP is $31,500!

Not to mention capturing the practicing participant with his way weird helmet. I'd like one of those to wear at my desk at work! And the spectator on the right, gazing curiously at something off screen, and last but not least, two of Clearwater's Finest (The Police) walking the beat to make sure everything is okay and stays that way!

This must be what the caravans of old were like. Everything needed to keep the wagon train moving had to come along for the trip. At extended stops, entire tent workshops are setup to offer repair and maintenance services. The Ironman event was no different. There were several large tents filled with gear and the men and women who would apply them to the bicycles. Very cool.

And if I haven't said it already, my respect and admiration to the participants of the Ironman Race. They all worked very hard to get here, and to participate. Hats off to them!

Clearwater Beach, Florida: 2009 FOSTER GRANT IRONMAN Pre-Race Photos

More great pre-race photos of athletes and preparations for the 2009 Clearwater Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3. Everywhere I went, I saw scenes like this one, with athletes partially or fully dressed in race day garb, talking with people that I imagined might be coaches, friends, supporters, family, or just interested spectators. What with 55 countries represented, you can imagine the wide selection of languages, dialects and accents to be heard as I wondered about. It was deliciously worldly and diverse.

And speaking of delicious and diverse... if you click on the photo above, of the colorful shoes on their feet, you will see something that made me laugh out loud. The man on the left is wearing very special socks indeed. The writing says "save the ta-tas"!!! It's true! Click on the picture and read it for yourself if you don't believe me. Well, I knew from the ribbon that it had to be related to some sort of breast cancer awareness campaign. And of course it is. As soon as I mentioned it to some friends, they told me all about it, and that I was, again, late to the game. Well, I know SOME of you out there might not know about it, so I am telling you now, and because I think it's really cool, I am including a link to the website. Oh, and did I mention that the 2009 FOSTER GRANT IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 70.3 was presented by Ford. Yup, they had quite an impressive display down there at Pier 60. They had numerous cars on display, including the Taurus SHO, the Escape hybrid, and the sweet looking Ford Flex pictured below. That baby got back, eh? Oh yeah. It might seem a little boxy, but I think it's kind of cool looking. This one certainly caught my eye! According to the Edmunds.com website, the MSRP starts at $28,550. Important Notice To Athletes: Click this link to read about the relocation of swim for Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3.

It's back! The 2009 FOSTER GRANT IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 70.3 takes place today, November 14th, presented by Ford. Did you know it was coming? Did you see the barricades lying in the medians waiting to be erected for today? Is your neighborhood one of those getting cutoff for a while?

Think about it: 1,650 athletes; 55 countries represented; ages from 18 to 79 in the field. And not just one 79 year old, but 3! First they will swim 1.2 miles, then ride their bicycles 56 miles, and then run 13.1 miles! All in one day!! Click this link to read about the race on the FOSTER GRANT IRONMAN website.

I had the good fortune to be down on Clearwater Beach this past Thursday as athletes began to appear in droves. In various stages of preparation, including check-in, bicycle claim from the transport service, and practice. Yes, lots of them, running, jogging, cycling all over the place. And good for them too! The only thing I did not see was any of them swimming. Their might have been some swimming, but it was really windy and cold. And in at least one area, I notice the life guards had the red "No Swim" flags out. Yikes. This probably explains why the swim course has been changed. See the link above if you are curious.

I watched the various athletes checking in at various stations around the event area, and I could not help but wonder what it must be like to be part of something so very BIG. Something of a scope so much larger than oneself. Oh my.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Shells All Around On The Seashore

So, tell the truth, how many pounds of seashells do you have lying around your house right now? Yeah, that's what I thought. Guilty here too, at least 5 pounds squirreled away here and there. Ugh.

But not so much these days. Now I try to be considerate and leave plenty for others to enjoy. Also, I try not to step on shells when I am not shelling. There is no sound I hate to hear on the beach like the sound of joggers crushing shells by the hundreds as they jog obliviously down the sand. Hate it!

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Blue Skies, Palm Trees and Condo's Anyone?

If you are headed over the Clearwater Memorial Causeway to Clearwater Beach, you can see the Sandpearl Resort and Condo's long before you see any sand! And there is that other condo over there two... or rather and there are those other two condo's over there also...

Ya know, I just CANNOT keep up with it all. And darnit all, it's been way too long since I spent some quality time down on the beach. I think perhaps it's time to head down for a sunset stroll some day soon. Maybe some ice cream too, while I get my feet in the sand and my head out of the office!

Happy April Fool's day... and no, this is not an April Fool's joke.. trying to get back on this blogging horse and post more pics more often. Stop laughing! Oh, like you care anyway! :)

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Construction? What Construction?

Seriously now, don't let all those half-built buildings, and the construction site netting, and trucks, and construction workers, fool you. Nothing going on down here. Nothing going on down on Clearwater Beach. No, it's not the Billion Dollar Beach. Nothing like that.

No matter what it looks like, Clearwater Beach is NOT being sold out to developers. Nope. That's not it at all. Nope, all the hotel rooms are not being replaced with condo's, sucking up all the parking areas. Nope, that's not it all. This is clearly NOT a case of turning a beautiful resort family beach area into a beautiful rich people only area. Nope.

If you ask me, this is why God invented hurricanes. :) Yeah, if I were rich, I would probably LOVE to have a condo on the beach. See, who says money is not good for you. Who says money is the root of all evil? Oh and hurray for #44, P.B.O.!

I saw a bumper sticker out there once that said "A Bad Day Fishing Is Better Than A Good Day Working." I hereby declare the same can be said of Clearwater Beach.

A bad day at Clearwater Beach is better than a good day at work! Even if, like in the photograph above, you are driving a work truck out there to earn a living. After all, you could be working anywhere, but if you get to work down on Clearwater Beach, you are likely to have some great scenery!

A driving shot of one of the many condos on Sand Key. I used to hate condos, but then realized how good it is to get more people to live in smaller areas. Good to keep them from taking up more land elsewhere. And of course, the condos on the beach really are just temporary you know.

I think this one will make a great artificial reef.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: The Beatles On Clearwater Beach???

Did you know that when the Beatles were recording their album called Abbey Road, they were originally intending to call it Clearwater Beach? They all came over here to Clearwater Beach, Florida and started shooting all sorts of scenes. They came up with this really cool shot, but eventually decided the Coast Guard helicopter just wasn't working. So they had to settle for the Abbey Road scene after all that. But the Beatles always fondly remembered their time here on Clearwater Beach.

At least, that is to say, that's how it happened in my head while I was daydreaming about this photograph I snapped on Clearwater Beach recently. You have to admit, there are four of them in the water, and the one second from left looks a lot like Ringo! :) Haha.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: INSPIRATION: Jeff Smith of San Diego, CA: Foster Grant Ironman Championship 70.3

If, by some chance, for some reason, you just did NOT find yesterday's post of Dominque Benassi COMPLETELY INSPIRING... I present another new hero of mine: Jeff Smith. According to the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 website, Jeff is an Engineer from San Diego, California. Wow!

I have to admit, I have been feeling a little sorry for myself lately, feeling overwhelmed at work and with things going on at home... but it only took a few seconds of seeing the determination of people like Jeff Smith and Dominique Benassi to slap me out of my self-pity.

As if all that were not enough, to celebrate Veterans Day is to acknowledge the tremendous, and often ultimate, sacrifice made by so many. I bow low, I give thanks. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Clearwater Beach, Florida: INSPIRATION: Dominique Benassi of France: Ironman World Championship 70.3

This is Dominique Benassi of Bastia, France. This, and more, I learned from the Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3 website. He is 47, an Electrician. As you may have noticed, he has only one leg. He finished the Ironman, swimming 1.2 miles, biking 56 miles, and running 13.1 miles, with a rank of 586 out of 1,254.

I don't know much more about him, but this is all I need to know to be COMPLETELY INSPIRED! I didn't expect that when I walked, with my two good legs, down the street to stand, with my two good legs, and watch the athletes ride by on their bicycles. I never expected to see a man with only one leg competing in one of the hardest races on this planet. Incredible! My hat is off to Dominique Benassi.

*I write this in the evening on Election Day, while I listen to the results... I hope that, come Wednesday, we are waking to a refreshed America where we can all work together to fix the problems that are facing our great nation.*

So many places to live, only one life within which to enjoy them all! Here is another option for Clearwater Beach accommodations or housing. Which do you prefer? Myself, I have never been too keen on high density housing. That is, not for myself. I think it is ideal for many people, and I am glad there is such a thing for those people.

I worked with a builder for a while, and I learned a lot more about habitat and how we live, as humans. Let's face it, the more of us that are here on this planet, the more need to explore higher density lifestyles while innovating the highest possible quality of life in those communities! Have you ever heard of Co-Housing?

PS. Today is ELECTION DAY! Get out and vote. I mean it, leave your beach blanket by the door, grab your car keys, and head to the polls! Well, that is, okay, if you are voting for my guy, GO VOTE... if you are voting for the other guy... get your beach blanket and hit the sand. We'll take care of that pesky election. :)

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Sand Key Park Picnic Area

If you are at Sand Key Park, at Sand Key Beach, keep an eye out for this neat little picnic area. It's out of the way somewhat, so it's not obvious. But it sits right alongside Clearwater Pass, so you can watch the various boats heading out into the Gulf of Mexico.

" ...Crap, it's all crap. He said again, louder. And then he pounded his fist on the table. It didn't change anything of course, and only felt good for a brief moment before his hand started to hurt.

The world was spinning out of control. Not just the world, but HIS world. He felt so powerless to stop it, to slow it down even. He had no control and it made him crazy. Then, it made him so deeply, deeply sad that he felt as though he couldn't breathe.

What now? What now? The image of his daughter's smiling face appeared before him, and he choked on the emotional right hook. Anything, God, anything at all, just name it. ..."

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Dusk Settles - Life Goes On

A happy group of people enjoy the day, right down to the last minutes of dusk, as the warm, welcoming lights come on, promising comfort and good memories of a fine day spent.

"... Richard watched the happy people playing on the beach. It was getting darker by the minute but they didn't care. They were having the best time, and a little dusk wasn't going to stop them.

He watched, and yet he felt no lightness in his heart. It used to feel good, it used to make him smile to watch others having fun. He'd had plenty himself, and it brought back nice memories... usually. But tonight it wasn't working. He was thinking of her, and he ached.

It wasn't supposed to be like this, their new arrangement. How was he supposed to feel? Where could he put his mind that was a safe place? Where could he escape to that wasn't so painful? He was here, she was there, but then... so was he. How did this happen?

Richard stretched deeply, hoping to work out the tightness growing in his neck and shoulders. It didn't work. He turned on the TV and flipped channels for a while. It made him angry. He could find no safe haven for his hurting heart tonight. It hurt more and more, not less and less. The aching, the longing... the pain... Karma? ..."

Perhaps you are missing the beach? Perhaps you enjoy the puzzle of finding things amid the many, many shells? Many of us enjoy the chance to sit quietly and paw through the shells, looking for the gems that become treasures in our desk drawers.

"...Petunia crawled up onto the next small seashell that she could manage. Huffing and puffing, she made it to the top and sat down with a sigh. 'How long is this going to go on?', she wondered to herself. 'WHY is this happening?' Of course, there were still no answers. She had been smaller than a tiny seashell for what seemed like days.

It had all started simply enough, sitting on the beach searching through the wave tossed piles of small seashells. She had found some neat little shells and was enjoying the soft, sleepy warmth of the early fall sunshine. Then, she thought maybe she had fallen asleep, but she wasn't sure of that. What she was sure of was that suddenly she was a very tiny little girl, crawling about among seashells that were ten times larger than her. 'Perhaps I should have listened to Mother', she mused. Mother always said 'Careful what you wish for!'..."

"... Walter noted the No Lifeguard On Duty sign and grunted with satisfaction as he strode past. "That will only make my job easier" he thought as his searching eyes found the two specs disappearing into the sandy distance. "Yes, run my little ones, run and run and run. You will be tired soon. Then I will catch up to you. Yes."

It was with no small amount of surprise that he suddenly heard the stealthy footstep behind him. It was only a whisper on the sand, but to his trained ears, it might well have been a freight train. His surprise was only surpassed by his sudden, fleeting, regret that his careless focus on the little ones had resulted in his being caught off guard by the owner of the large, powerful hands that were closing around his throat..."

Frank and Julia wandered among the dunes in silence, each lost in their own thoughts about what had happened. Julia could not help but wonder how they had come to the place they found themselves today. Frank simply wanted a way to get past it and move forward. From time to time they would hold hands, but it only seemed to last a few paces. Then one or the other would seem to find some pretext to need both hands.

When they came upon the little yellow flower, blooming so cheerfully among the sea oats and sand dunes, it held their attention like a beacon. Almost simultaneously, it reminded them of the little yellow flowers that had bloomed in their garden in Fargo. It was the first house they lived in together, and the memories were rich and happy.

Their hands reached for each other, and suddenly they were hugging tightly to each other. Frank thought he sensed Julia was crying. She whispered into his neck "I really do love you." "And I really love you too" he said. He stroked her hair and felt as though they just might be alright. She pulled back just a little, without letting go of him, and smiled. "Yeah, we'll be alright, won't we?" she said. He smiled into those beautiful eyes that always melted his heart. "Yes, my love, we will be okay."

Another stunning sunset to close out another stunning day in paradise. And though I find it calming to watch the sun set, looking at my photos always seems to activate my imagination...

"Sir, I still don't understand... why would ask me to join you to watch the sunset? I mean, you're Colin Powell! You're the Secretary of State! What's the deal?"

"First, Barack, I want to make sure you know how to relax. Look at this sunset... it's AWESOME! As Secretary of State, I am often frustrated working for Bush, so I have learned to take in a sunset whenever I can. And when you get to be President, you gotta know how to relax!"

"You sound so certain about it Colin..."

"Well I believe in you Barack, and I told them today 'Barack Obama will be an excellent President of the United States'.

So, in my world of Outrageous Lies, that's how it went down, as Barack Obama and Colin Powell sat on Sand Key Beach watching the sunset.

I just don't understand what is so difficult about the concept of putting our trash in a trash can. It amazes me how often I see people just throw litter on the ground. It makes me want to chase them down and make them eat it. Whew... dialing it down now... I want a phone number I can call and report the license tag when I see people throw trash out their car windows. Litterbugs!

I guess it's a rough life if you are a vending machine out on the beach. These two are doing time on the beach at the Sand Key Beach Park. Caged up like animals, it must add some complexity to restock them. In fact, perhaps that's why the one on the right is empty. It should have suntan lotions and other such beach sundries in it.

Come to think of it, for the Pepsi machine, how does it feel to go through life referred to as a 'Coke Machine'? Funny, eh?

I looked at that word a long time, thinking there were too many H's. So I finally consulted Dictionary.com to see for sure. Of course they got it right! How could you think that a State Park would have a misspelled word on their sign?

So this is bathhouse #1 at Sand Key Park, on Sand Key Beach. That's on Sand Key, if you didn't catch that already. It's a neat place, and nice to have a place to freshen up when the sand starts to chafe!

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Sky, Clouds, And The Incredible Weight Of Being

It is incredible to me, to think of clouds and sky and how enormous it all is. Then, when you think about the sun up there shining in the sky, blazing away in all its glory, the 'world' seems to get much bigger, and my life seems to get much, much smaller.

What a great weight, at times, to bear the pressure of all that potential! And yet, one would think it would be a release to realize just how small, and insignificant, life really is. Makes me ponder the purity of a life lived much more simply.

Perhaps I'll head back out to Sand Key Beach and think about it some more!

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Sand Key Beach Lifeguard Stand: Watching The Watchers

I can't help but imagine all those windows in all those condos are always watching all of us down there on the beach! And then, with the man on the lifeguard stand facing that way... it's like he's watching them back! No, he was not a lifeguard.

It was ironic. When I spotted the lifeguard stand, I headed over to take pictures of it, and thought it might be a nice view to hang out up on the deck and take some pictures. Of course, these folks beat me to it, so I just ended up taking pictures of them, standing up there enjoying the view.

It only just occurred to me why they might have the STAY OFF signs on a lifeguard station. If for no other reason: Someone like me goes up there to hang out and look around. Meanwhile, someone on the beach says "Oh look, he's on duty, let's go swimming!" Then they promptly get swept away in a riptide while I look around wondering who is screaming! Oy!

Same bold blue sky, different clouds that no one will ever see again...

The amazing paradox of clouds and sky... The sky is the very same sky that beings on this planet have been looking up to for eons. The clouds, however, the clouds that seem to be the very essence of sky, they are never, ever the same! Yes, perhaps the same vapor, the same moisture, but never the exact same cloud.

*I'm glad if my pictures help any of you get through the day with a little more calm, or perhaps a different perspective on life. Believe me, the act of snapping the photos, and the posting of them here, help to put life in perspective for me too. :)

I wanted to show you another view, from a different angle, of the two guys fishing from Sand Key Park. In this shot, Clearwater Pass is to the left, so to speak, and the view ahead is of Clearwater Harbor.

In the distance, you can see the Clearwater Memorial Causeway Bridge, and the Clearwater Downtown Waterfront skyline. It was great light, late in the afternoon, that put such a bright whitewash on the structures in the background.

Did I mention, there are three short fishing piers (would that make them docks?) jutting out from Sand Key Park into Clearwater Pass, where you can fish for free? Yup, pretty cool! These two guys seemed to be enjoying it just fine!

I didn't get a chance to ask how it was going, but I suspect it works pretty well there, since you can fish pretty close to the bridge, as well as out into the Pass. I may just have to try it some time. It really is a pretty cool park!

News Flash: Dunedin, Florida: Barack Obama To Hold Public Rally In Dunedin!

That's right, according to William March of TBO.com, Barack Obama is coming to Pinellas County:

"Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama will hold a public rally in Dunedin on Wednesday while he’s here preparing for the first presidential debate.

Doors will open for the rally at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Knology Park.

Tickets are not required, but attendees are urged to RSVP at Obama’s Florida campaign Web site, www.fl.barackobama.com.

Obama is expected to be in the area from Tuesday through Thursday preparing for his debate with Republican Sen. John McCain on Friday in Mississippi."

Ya know, I think I do pretty well okay with my photography for the most part. Some pictures are definitely better than others. And some are crap, but I try to make sure none of those get posted! :) So when I snap a shot that seems to me to be really cool, I get excited.

This is one of those photographs. The recent storms had left a big tidal pool high up on the beach, near the very feet of these condominiums. And as the sun began to set, there appeared the most wonderfully lit reflection in the almost still pond. WOW. So this is my shot. I hope you like it. (comments either way are welcome)

I spotted this cool looking scooter while I was on Sand Key the other day. I was thinking it was called Tank, but have since learned it is called a Ruckus. Yes, by Honda.

I was just on their website, but it was not all that impressive, so I can't bring myself to post the link. Sorry. But I do like this model. It looks more robust and sturdy than a lot of scooters I have seen.

This is it, Clearwater Pass, gateway to the wide open Gulf Of Mexico. Taken from Sand Key Park, this photograph includes Sand Key on the left, and the southern tip of Clearwater Beach on the right.

Yeah, pretty cool shot, if I do say so myself. Pictures of clouds are right up there with pictures of the sunset... I can't get enough of them! After all, they are always different!

Clearwater Beach, Florida: Sand Key Development vs Park

I snapped this one while on photo safari at Sand Key Park, hunting sunsets. Reviewing my take later, I find this striking contrast between the overdeveloped condominium forest in the background, and the wonderfully UN-developed Sand Key Park in the foreground.

Sad to say, the developers won another round recently, when the Legg-Mason group was given the go ahead to replace an old, small restaurant right at sand's edge with a 6 story condo tower. The residents did not want it, but the city allowed it just the same.

Honestly, I just don't get it. Are they trying to say that the manhole is clean? Or that the manhole cover is clean? Maybe they are trying to say the street is sanitary? Or what? Maybe it is just a grass roots campaign to get people to think about being clean?

I don't know. But something about it is certainly SANITARY! Hmmm, how many words can you make out of SANITARY? Ant, art, arts (always go for the plurals!), air, airs, airy, (no cheating, put the dictionary down!), in, it, is, rat, rats, star, satin, satyr...
