Seeing birds in flight is always a stirring moment. Pelicans, however, take it to a higher level. They rule the skies, and to see the way they can soar and glide is something else. I've seen these large birds gliding like a silent jet just inches above the surface of the water. I've also seen them come crashing down into the waves in a fish catching dive. They are really amazing birds, and it's wonderful to see them in action.
That being said, I will continue to hope that their populations do not decline as a result of the long term effects of the BP oil leak. I know it sounds like most of the oil just miraculously disappeared, and I would be as happy as anyone else if that's true. But I just have a hard time believing it. I will keep my fingers crossed.
